The Five Nations Public Health Medicine Environmental Group (PHMEG) is an independent professional body, established in the early 1980's, representing nearly 200 doctors and others working in health protection throughout the UK.
The members are mostly CsCDC or Consultant Epidemiologists. In addition, other specialists working in the field of health protection are encouraged to join.
Our members include some of the most senior practitioners at grassroots level with decades of experience in communicable disease control, surveillance, immunisation, environmental hazards and outbreak management. Since our members have worked through previous re-organisations of the health service and before the inception of the HPA we feel we have much insight as to what has worked well and what hasn't which would be helpful to those planning the new National Public Health Service for England.
Members working in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic and each of the regions in England elect a representative to the Executive. The Executive meets quarterly and between meetings corresponds with members through a closed electronic e-mail system. This ensures that members participate actively in all PHMEG discussions and decisions.
The PHMEG organises several scientific meetings annually, and is one of the co-organisers of the annual Five Nations Conference on Epidemiology and Control of Communicable Diseases and Environmental Hazards.
